In the wake of The Last of Us 2’s release last year, during one of the strangest, most challenging times in living memory, that itch for emotive, often heart-breaking storytelling in video clip games is a tough one to scratch. Available on: PS4

Let’s start with its nearest neighbour, Uncharted 4. Nathan Drake’s last adventure was the series most introspective offering yet, and it really delivered in the story department. Clearly, Naughty Dog learned a lot of lessons from The Last of Us & applied them here khổng lồ weave emotion into the narrative, which deals with growing up, settling down & the tenuous bonds of family. A bombastic sayonara that takes the player from Scotland lớn the lost đô thị of Libertalia, if you want kích hoạt Uncharted 4 has got it in droves, with the inclusion of the grappling hook invigorating the clever combat. With a stellar voice cast - Troy Baker who voiced The Last of Us" Joel plays Nate’s brother, Sam, - peerless graphics và fluid animations, Uncharted 4 is a blockbuster affair that should be right at the đứng đầu of your danh sách for games khổng lồ play after The Last of Us.

Another story of a stubborn father figure và the development of his relationship with a rebellious young girl who may or may not be able to decide the fate of all, this third outing for Geralt of Rivia shares quite a bit of emotional DNA with The Last of Us, even if its settings are (literal) worlds apart. While it’s great fun tearing monsters apart limb to lớn limb và traversing across Slavic, mythical lands, the true heart of The Witcher 3 lies in its portrayal of Geralt’s growth as an adoptive father lớn Ciri as she blossoms into a powerful woman in her own right on her journey khổng lồ defeat The Wild Hunt. If you found your heartstrings tugged on during The Last of Us, then prepare to almost have them ripped out as Geralt travels far & wide to lớn find Ciri và meets more than a fair few colorful characters along the way.

Ellie may have quickly risen through the ranks khổng lồ become one of the most iconic female characters in gaming history but there’s still one woman in kích hoạt and adventure that tops them all. That is, of course, Lara Croft - explorer và legendary raider of, well, tombs. If you liked the placing of a fiercely independent character like Ellie right at the center of The Last of Us, then you’ll find plenty to lớn love in the recent reboot of the Tomb Raider series. The most recent entry in the new series - Shadow of the Tomb Raider - even played out like a survival horror at times, akin to The Last of Us, và Lara’s pursuit of history and archaeology encompasses enough badass moments to lớn keep anyone that loved Ellie’s refusal lớn back down highly entertained.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

Available on: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch

You probably best remember Josef Fares from when he said “F*&# the Oscars” at The game Awards, but the reason he made it onto that stage in the first place was the runaway success of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, a delightful indie game he directed that may have flown under your radar. It’s another emotional affair just lượt thích The Last of Us where you control two brothers who have lớn seek out a cure for their father"s illness. It’s a sprawling adventure where you control each brother with the thumbsticks, solving puzzles và thinking outside of the box to lớn progress. The story is centered around mourning & grief and shares a kinship with The Last of Us despite being totally different, gameplay-wise. There’s also the shared DNA of two characters motivating each other in a harsh situation.

Beyond: Two Souls

Available on: PS4, PC

If your favorite aspect of The Last of Us was the immense detail of its storytelling và the impassioned voice acting that came together with motion capture performances to create an unforgettable narrative, then Beyond: Two Souls is sure to lớn go down a storm. Released in the same year as The Last of Us, this epic dive into the supernatural boasts some top-tier acting chops from Willem Dafoe and Ellen Page in a story of adolescence và adulthood tied into a paranormal world. Beyond: Two Souls revolves around the psychic liên kết between two entities - one in corporeal form and one bodiless - and offers a complex and richly built environment for players to control either of the eponymous two souls, as they work their way through a winding story that involves the CIA, an ethereal realm and, like The Last of Us, more than a fair mô tả of family tragedy. If you’re ready for another cinematic gaming experience, plug into Beyond: Two Souls & lose yourself in both the physical world & the spiritual one.

Bioshock Infinite

Available on: PC, PS4, Xbox One

Another narrative behemoth that preceded The Last of Us by a few months in 2013, Irrational’s Bioshock Infinite is an ambitious game within an already genre-defining series, an atmospheric, imagination-stoking story with an inspired Steampunk aesthetic. Again, the protagonist is played by Troy Baker (Joel in The Last of Us) and follows his attempts to lớn rescue a younger woman with world-bending powers from a Utopia grounded in American exceptionalism. Ken Levine’s assessment of American society in Columbia is still fascinating lớn this day, và the well-paced story will keep you on your toes indefinitely. It’s a bit more eccentric than The Last of Us’s grounded, harsh world but is still totally worth it for the twists and turns of the gripping story. Couple that with the engaging combat of a Bioshock game and you’re onto a winner. Go on, bring us the girl, and wipe away the debt!

State of Decay 2

Available: PC, Xbox One

There are plenty of aspects that make The Last of Us brilliant which don’t necessarily center around narrative và character development. After all, when we strip it back, at its vi xử lý core it is a zombie survival game, one which has a particular focus on the importance of making players really think about their approach lớn dispatching the infected & making every bullet count. If this feature was one of the main draws for you when it came lớn The Last of Us, then look no further than State of Decay’s second installment, where players are regularly encouraged to lớn make scavenging a priority & where the third-person POV game play that was utilized in The Last of Us is at the forefront. State of Decay might not be as invested in characters as Naughty Dog are in their titles but, in place of this, there is a great amount of fun to be had in an mở cửa world environment that judges the player by their leadership by throwing them into situations where they must boost group morale, establish homesteads & defenses, all while using stealth và skills to lớn decimate the zombie population. Defeat the undead, rally your ragtag troops, rinse và repeat. You know the drill.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead

Available on: PC, PS4, Xbox One, sản phẩm điện thoại Devices

Clementine and Lee’s relationship is incredibly analogous to lớn that of Ellie và Joel. A father figure and a young girl trying to lớn survive in the post-apocalypse. In Telltale’s attempt, which recently capped off its fourth season, seven years after the release of its first episode, the drama is the focus over action, which is for the better in this case. A gargantuan tale that stumbled and fell towards the end, The Walking Dead is absolutely worth a playthrough if you care about narrative in games, especially if you’re keen on the kind of tale told by Naughty Dog. Unlike future Telltale titles the choices really vị matter here, và you’ll be spending a while in the pause screen at multiple memorable narrative junctures when the trò chơi throws a crisis of conscience at you. A testament lớn it’s writing, It’s tremendously hard not khổng lồ get invested in the troupe of endearing characters, và consequentially hate the antagonists who come to lớn threaten them.

Far Cry 5

Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC

One of the most beloved parts of The Last of Us is its gorgeous settings - often overflowing with lush greenery, even in the ruins of former populated cities. Another shooter that manages to nail its setting is Far Cry 5, which sends the protagonist (known only as the Deputy) on a wild mission across a fictional county in Montana in a violent and, often, absurd race to lớn put a stop to lớn the reign of terror doled out by a religious fanatic. Hope County, where all the action takes place, is a beautiful mountainous region, characterized by streams of sunlight that breakthrough into the woods, & the spot has charm to lớn burn. Far Cry 5’s landscape is not only a thing khổng lồ behold but its narrative also provides trigger-happy players with the ability to roam không lấy phí and take aim at as many crazed cultists as they like. Who doesn’t like a little scenery khổng lồ go with their liberation missions?

Red Dead Redemption 2

Available on: PS4, Xbox One

Set in the dying throes of the Old West, there is a similar apocalyptic tension lớn Rockstar’s latest - an epic novella of a trò chơi framed in one of the most feature-filled and gorgeous open world’s ever made. You play Arthur Morgan, a renegade cowpoke who appears trapped by dogma in his lifestyle, only lớn be liberated & brought khổng lồ question his surroundings by a cast of well-written & emotionally probing characters. Sure, the controls can let you down now and then và it will most likely take you over 70 hours khổng lồ beat, but that isn’t without its rewards. With similar triumphs in dialogue & long-haul storytelling, Red Dead Redemption 2 is well worth investing in if you’re the type that likes lớn get lost in a game like you would a good book - with high stakes and fantastic character development.

A Plague Tale: Innocence

Available on: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

Having just dropped in May of this year, A Plague Tale: Innocence is a relatively recent addition to this các mục but a worthwhile one none-the less. It shares similar story beats to The Last of Us and you can tell its influence as soon as you play it. It follows brother-sister full bộ Amicia and Hugo as they attempt to survive in a historic setting against hordes of horrible, plague-infested rats. Hugo is naturally quite the naive young lad, dependent on you to survive in this grim world of horrors. It’s full of clever rat-based puzzles và has a gripping story to tide you through. The oppressive world really does work to make the protagonists feel helpless against the plague tide, which curates a grim dark atmosphere. Perhaps one for fans of The Last of Us looking for something a little darker, A Plague Tale takes what The Last of Us did right và steps boldly forward, injecting its own clever ideas.

Max Payne 3

Available on: PC, PS3, Xbox One

One of Rockstar’s most underrated games, Max Payne 3 preceded The Last of Us but offered a similar cinematic character study. It’s far more high-energy, a modern tale focused on drug addiction & unresolved grief which takes Max through the favelas và skyscrapers of Brazil. Its main relation to lớn The Last of Us is the way in which it portrays a broken man struggling lớn come khổng lồ terms with a new world. A well-told story & a masterclass in third-person shooting, Max Payne 3’s ultraviolet bass-boosted gunplay is the perfect chaser khổng lồ Naughty Dog’s creeping stealth action. With visuals that still hold up và a magnificent soundtrack lớn boot, you should certainly consider sticking your nostalgia goggles on & diving headfirst into this hidden narrative gem.

Metro: Last Light

Available on: PC, PS4, Xbox One

The middle child of the Metro series (but arguably its apex,) Metro: Last Light came out mere months before The Last of Us but channelled the same style of environment design. If you loved exploring the ruins of society with Joel và Ellie, 4A Games passionately built world of crumbling architecture & underground subway tunnels will delight all of your senses. A far more lonely trò chơi than The Last of Us, Last Light relies more heavily on Survival Horror khổng lồ curate its devastating atmosphere, with noises unexplained, radiation sickness and eldritch creatures all posing potent threats khổng lồ the player. It’s a fight for survival that shouldn’t be missed, and even has an in-built morality system that weaves carefully within its fascinating story. If you loved Naughty Dog’s tense post-apocalypse, you’ll no doubt enjoy the oppressive, often claustrophobic atmosphere of Metro & it’s still remarkable visuals.

Days Gone

Available on: PlayStation 4

At first thought of as derivative of The Last of Us, Days Gone is another PS4 first-party exclusive that đơn hàng with the trouble of surviving a dangerous apocalypse, extrapolated into a wide mở cửa world. In fact, Bend Studio conceptualized of it before The Last of Us hit, but it has since been tarred with the same brush of expectations given its cinematic style và setting. Upon release last month it received middling praise và is mainly reflective of The Last of Us in its gripping open-world ravaged by zombies, or freakers as protagonist Deacon St. John likes khổng lồ refer khổng lồ them. Think of it as a jaunt into a more floral part of America that was turned on its head by the same virut as the one seen in Naughty Dog’s narrative epic and you’re bound khổng lồ have some fun. With crafting on the fly và similar combat, you’ll feel right at home with this one, if not able to tinker with the chơi game in a more feature-filled open world setting. It’s not quite got the narrative chops, but it still provides a setting that will capture your imagination.

God of War

Available on: PS4

Cory Barlog & Sony Santa Monica’s beautiful baby, God of War is a masterpiece in its own right, but you can clearly see where The Last of Us paved the way for it. Another third-person trò chơi where you control an emotionally stunted father trying khổng lồ protect a subordinate that he consistently underestimates, God of War is a lot lượt thích The Last of Us, if not for the whole Norse setting and adrenaline-pumping boss battles with dragons. Really, the shared DNA can be seen in the incredible storytelling & cinematic flair. God of War one-shot style is incredibly immersive & never lets up regardless of which ancient realm you find yourself in. Atreus’ snowy relationship with Kratos is a beautiful slow burn, which rewards the player with bursts of palpable emotion across the game’s trăng tròn hour. If you’re a tín đồ of The Last of Us but you haven’t yet caught this one, pull it straight from your backlog và get going.
